ISLAMABAD: Turkish Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock hosted an Iftar in Ankara featuring a variety of dishes prepared from pulses to mark the International Year of Pulses (IYP).
On the joint proposal of Pakistan and Turkey, the 68th United Nations General Assembly had declared the year 2016 as the ‘International Year of Pulses (IYP).’
The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) was nominated to facilitate the implementation of IYP in collaboration with governments, relevant organisations and other stakeholders, said a message received on Monday from the Pakistan Embassy in Ankara, Turkey.
The IYP 2016 is aimed at public awareness of the nutritional benefits of pulses as part of sustainable food production with the objective of food security and nutrition.
It will create a unique opportunity to encourage connections throughout the food chain that would better utilise pulse-based proteins, further global production of pulses, better utilise crop rotations and address the challenges in the trade of pulses.
